Mario Bellini studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan where he graduated in 1959. During his studies he had as teachers Italian architects Ernesto Nathan Rogers and Piero Portaluppi.

Between 1959 to 1962, he was artistic director of La Rinascente function, a department store chain that has contributed significantly to the promotion of industrial design after the war. In 1962 he founded an architecture firm with Marco Romano, then opens the "Bellini studio" in Milan in 1973. He is since 1963, design consultant at Olivetti, for whom he created the calculator Divisumma 18/28 in 1973 typewriters Praxis 35 and 45.

He presides the ADI (Associazione per il Designo Industriale) from 1969 to 1971 and sets out its mobile environment Kar-a-Sutra exposure to Italy: the New Domestic Landscape organized by the Museum of Modern Art in 1972. This created him worth to be hired as a consultant at Renault in 1978. During the 1970s, Bellini organizes meetings, workshops devoted to the study of the relationship between humans and their artificial environment, one of the recurring themes of all his work.

Mario Bellini is since 1979 member of the Scientific Council of the design section of the Milan Triennale. He was a professor of design at the Higher Institute of Industrial Design Venice from 1962 to 1965 before teaching industrial design at the Hochschule fur Angewandte Kunst in Vienna in 1982 and 1983, and the Domus Academy in Milan 1986 to 1991. He was also editor of the magazine Domus.

Among the works he created, showing the line of Bambole seats for B & B Italia in 1972, the chair and the chair Cab Cassina SpA disseminated (1977) and office chairs Figura, made for Vitra in collaboration with Dieter Thiel. It has also signed luminaires for FLOS for Artemide and Erco and audiovisual equipment for Yamaha Brionvega.

Mario Bellini has won numerous design awards, including seven Compasso d'Oro, and think we can succeed in improving the environment through unification of design.
